Horta Harmonia (HH) was born in 2021 when Armando and Maureen migrated from the U.S. to his childhood home in Portugal. Their goal was to promote biodiversity, conserve and be immersed in nature, and achieve food and seed sovereignty by growing their own food and seed-saving.
Horta Harmonia’s first challenge upon arrival was to revitalize the soil that was covered in tarp for almost 20 years. The methods used to achieve this are true to our ethos of commiting to agro-ecology and nature-based solutions: homegrown vermicomposting (made with coffee grounds that Armando collects from local shops and cafes); planting pollinator gardens; recycling and repurposing discarded farming supplies; using well and collected rainwater; and absolutely no herbicides, pesticides, or inorganic fertilizers.
We grow food all year long: leafy greens, root and other vegetables, herbs, and fruits.
